A brief history of the English language from the Runes to Modern English
Instructor: Denis Chabot Instructor: Liz Perrin
| A brief history of the English language and the influence and borrowings from other culture and civilizations that lead to the actual English language.
This course presents the English language as a language that had evolve over time. It covers the main periods of the English language: Old English, Middle English, Early Modern English and Modern English.
Throughout this historical overview we will cover the premises of the English writen language which are the runic alphabet. We will do a survey of the various invasions that modeled the English language and pay a special attention to the Norman invasions that allowed many French terms to flow into the English language. The learner will be able to localize and understand the factors that contribute to the existence of “cognates” (words which have formal and semantic similarities). An awareness of the close lexical resemblance and their ability to identify some resemblance with the French words and the surrounding context will help students learn English.
This site offers information, activities and tools for teachers, young students and perhaps any adults that are learning English as a second language. We do hope that in a “constructivism perspective” the teachers and educators visiting our Moodle site will feel free to adapt these activities, adding their own inputs |

Contemporary Discourse on Multiculturalism
| The term Multiculturalism , like terms such as 'family values' is both politically and culturally laden. It is a 'feel good' term that whispers of open-mindedness and tolerance- of Others. When multiculturalism entered into the popular discourse in the late 1960's, however, few Canadians could have foreseen a time in which 'visible minorities' and 'cultural communities' might actually outnumber White Canadians! The term itself is becoming dated as Canada is becoming an intercultural society wherein many families consist of several different ethnicities. In some areas, the question of who exactly is doing the tolerating and who decides what is 'tolerable' is being hotly debated. Are Canadians becoming less tolerant in light of the rapidly shifting 'ethnic' demographics or are these rumblings merely the birth pangs of a new Canada emerging? What when some communities seeking further enfranchisement (certain religious groups) strive to limit the enfranchisement of other groups (women's rights or Gay rights)? This course seeks to explore a variety of voices on this topic from far-right extremists to extreme leftists. Participants will be encouraged to express their opinions and voice their concerns in an environment that promotes critical thought yet is non-judgemental.

The Medium is the Message: An Analysis of the Differences Between Print and Online Newspapers
Instructor: Rhea Westover
| Newspapers have been gradually going online for twenty years. Today, almost every newspaper has an online version and some are taking advantage of the interactive technologies that are now available. Blogs, podcasts, audio/visual, discussion boards, chats, RSS feeds, etc. have dramatically changed the way that people receive their news. Firstly, news can be updated and accessed every second of the day instead of only once in the morning. In addition, these new interactive features allow the audience to have a more active role. Instead of only having letters to the editor be the way their voices are heard, readers can now post their opinions instantaneously and this affects the way that news is now reported. |
